Words lie, numbers don’t
—
I have been underestimating the power of words all my life.
When I was at school I liked numbers, even thought I wasn’t very good at maths I knew numbers were where the truth lied. Numbers cannot lie, unlike words that can be twisted to deceive, to hurt and to lie.
Language is indefinite, and ambiguous. The meaning of a word differs from person to person, and it is possible to mean nothing at all by saying a lot.
Different humans use different languages to communicate, but mathematics is universal. Numbers always mean the same thing. They are absolute and never lie.
I liked how honest numbers were.
That’s why I ended up studying an engineering degree and believe me I made maths, sometimes so complicated that there were not even numbers—can you believe that?
Until very recently, maybe 3 years ago I didn’t understood the power of words.
You see, mathematics is the language of nature, but words is the language of humans. And we speak with humans way more than we speak with nature.
That’s why if you know how to convey a message, how to write the perfect sentence for other humans to understand our ideas is a marvelous thing. You see, humans are meant to live in groups, not in isolation with our own thoughts in our heads. Together we build humanity.
