I always thought that to be a successful writer, you had to get the perfect idea straight from your head onto the page. But when we talk about successful writing, we talk about successful rewriting.
We all feel attached to the first thoughts that come out of us into written form. But what differentiates successful writers from others is what they do in between that first draft and the final piece of writing.
In this exercise, they get out of their own head and enter the readerβs head. We have to respect the time they give us by giving them the information as briefly and distilled as possible.
Good writing is easy to understand because the work was done previously in the writerβs head instead of oursβthe reader.
To get a good page written, we only have to start with a good draft. To get a good draft written, we only have to turn a series of thoughts into a continuous text.
If you struggle to go from you first draft to something that people will enjoy reading, look here.
